DERMIS
what is the dermis
The dermis is the layer of skin beneath the epidermis. It is made up of collagen and elastin fibers, blood vessels, and nerve endings. The dermis is responsible for providing strength and elasticity to the skin, as well as allowing for sensation. It also helps to regulate body temperature and provide protection from the environment.
layers of the dermis
The dermis is composed of two layers -
the papillary layer
the reticular layer.
The papillary layer is the uppermost layer and is made of areolar connective tissue. It contains blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatics, and also contains dermal papillae, which are small projections that help the skin grip onto underlying tissues. The reticular layer is the deeper, thicker layer, and contains dense connective tissue, collagen, elastin, and sebaceous glands. It also contains hair follicles and sweat glands. Together, these two layers of the dermis provide strength, structure, and elasticity to the skin.
